The sesame is a plant cultivated in tropical regions around the world for its edible seeds. Sesame seeds are one of the oldest known oilseed crops. The extremely high oil content and its nutty flavor makes it a common ingredient in foods all around the world. As a major allergen, sesame can cause potentially fatal food allergies.

To prevent accidental exposure to sesame, it is crucial to inspect both the production environment and food products for traces of sesame, as cross-contamination can occur during manufacturing. Mandatory labeling of sesame in food products

In many countries, including the EU (Regulation (EU) No 1169/201) and the US (U.S. FDA – FALCPA 2004), mandatory labeling of sesame in food products is required by law due to the prevalence of sesame allergies. Sesame allergy affects a significant number of people, with estimates ranging from 0.1% to 0.5%.
